Confirmation I’m a geek…

So this past week did it. Up till now I considered myself soemone who was quite knowledgeable about computers and especially web stuff. Admittedly I’ve been sucked into doing web work before, but in those cases they were usually for other people’s sites, and only lasted limited amounts of time. Once I was done the project, I’d put quit “TextWrangler” (the souped up textedit program I use to code all my web stuff) and not open it for another few months. I had inklings that I was a webgeek, getting into a project and not stopping until it’s done, always looking for new cool ways to solve to problem, but the fact remainded, I was not addicted, I could put it all away after a project and go back to my regular life.

I can’t say that anymore…

To summarize, I spent ALL my spare time this past week working on this site, making it look good and adding new cool features (especially the Live Search and Gravatars – personal icons that act like a signiture for comments you leave) and in general, just ‘playing’ with the code. Hopefully you can notice the changes, some are obvious, some are not. When I sit back and try to subjectively assess my efficiency this week, the equation doesn’t even come close to balancing, I put in way more hours than are reflected in the modifications I made. That was the last straw, so now it’s official, I’m a webgeek.

The good news is that I now know that I will never get bored, there’s always stuff I can do here on the site, but the other side is that, well… I’ll be spending a lot of time with my computer. Funny how that compares with how I generally think of myself as a person who loves to be outside doing things, and would hate to have an office job sitting in front of a computer day-in and day-out. I’ll attribute it to the fact I’ve spent far too much time in cities lately, and while Ottawa is a lot nicer than most, it still is a city and doesn’t have those same kinds of wild places that you can explore in the country.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that usually I’d rather ‘play’ with the design than actually post stuff on this site. I need a minimum amount of content so I can test all the different features that I’m experimenting with, but the drive to write has been stuck in neutral. I guess as entertainment expenses go, the $7 per month it costs for me to have this website is a heck of a lot cheaper than what most people spend on entertainment, so at worst I’m just being typical value-concious me. On this note, I’ve come to realize that I really like comments, it makes it feel less like I’m just monologing on about random stuff, and when there’s interaction, there’s actually extra incentive to write. So, if I ever make you think, jot down your reaction and submit it, it’ll make this place more fun for all of us. Otherwise I’ll just keep yammering on about whatever comes to mind, and I’ll have to get into the habit of kicking my own butt each week or so to actually write something here.

So I know I warned you about the potential for random ramblings; looks like this is the first one (likely in a series of many to follow) so you now have a better idea of what you’re in for. Hope you like it :)

    Hi there,

I just wante dto ask you if you did this theme from scratch or if it is based on another theme as I like it very much and would like to get a basic theme resembling yours to start playing around with and modifying it.

    cheers

I started with the default “Kubric” theme, and made all the changes myself (there were quite a few). In the future I might “release” a version of my theme for download, but at this point I’m not ready to do that.
