The beauty of a day off
So here I am, for the second time in two years I find myself in a summer sublet without a kitchen table. At least this time it’s only for 2 days, not the 2 months I survived back in 2003 (I was amazed how expensive tables are, and how hard to transport – to the point I didn’t get one!). So now I’m sitting at my desk in my room, eating my supper of spaghetti (with kidney beans instead of tofu because the fridge got unplugged while I was away and my tofu “didn’t smell good” anymore) off a plate in front of my computer, while sipping water from my Nalgene. Talk about fine dining! Although I can’t really complain about this summer, I am looking forward to moving out of this house, away from the feeling that there are other people around who are ‘hiding’ from me – perfectly nice people when you make the effort ‘hunt them down for a conversation’, but would otherwise prefer to live their own lives. So in a way I feel like I’m going from living on my own (in a strange, somewhat awkward way) to just plain living on my own. Neither is anywhere as nice as living with friends/family, but given the choice (and the fact it’s only for 4 weeks) I think things are looking up for me.
Being able to take a day off without any consequences, to be able to spend some time reacclimatizing to Ottawa and starting to sort out India stuff (vaccinations – check, plane ticket – check) has been beautiful. And the beauty of it is that I think I will be ready to go back to work tomorrow, that I will almost want to go to work tomorrow. If I’d gone today, it wasn’t going to be pretty and I’m sure I’d have hated it, but now that I’ve had my time, I’m ready to go. So all you work-a-holics, go take a day off and then I think you’ll be able to appreciate your job at least a little more – no matter what you’re doing.
So I’m off to organize photos and call home, settle the past and look forward to the future. And folks, a piece of advice, kidney beans and spaghetti sauce don’t go well together…

Hi Shane!
My spaghetti sauce had black beans in it tonight….mmmmmm….so good! It’s funny that it can taste so good with one and not so good with the other…thanks for the heads up…I’ll make sure to keep my kidney beans and sauce seperate
I’m glad you took the day off !
