Word of the ‘semi-regular basis’
I’ve had question of the day and joke of the week (if you’re going to call it that V-Tough then you’d better get writing, you’ve got about 3 months of material to make up) and many other similar scams, but they all pale in comparison to my newest (and first) contribution to the land of regularly distributed tidbits of information – Hindi word of the ‘semi-regular basis’. I’ve been learning a lot of Hindi of the last three weeks, and its only getting started, but I’ve already found a bunch of words that are just begging to be shared – either because they’ve got cool meanings, or they just sound cool. So now they will be shared, right here on this website, on a ‘semi-regular basis’ because I don’t think my legs are up to all the walking required to get on the internet every day (2km & 200m vertical – each way) because the computer at the local internet shop has been broken for over a week now, and seems like it will stay that way for awhile. This isn’t all just fun though, (hopefully) it will also help me learn and retain Hindi vocabulary, something I really need to work on as I haven’t really learned the vocabulary from the last 5 chapters (trying to get a handle on all the tenses has taken all my time lately) and it’s only going to get harder…
So to start it off, I’m giving you a special treat – 2 words, double the fun! Hope you like’em.
- pukka – certain, definite (most often used with emphasis as either a question or answer). Also means paved or cooked properly.
- * karna – Hindi’s answer to the famous “Get Fuzzy” cartoon in which Bucky so eloquently states, “you can wordify anything if you just verb it…” In Hindi, replace the * with nearlt any adjective or noun, and volia, you’ve ‘verbed’ a new word. garum karna (hot do), yad karna (remember do), gardi karna (car do), are only a few of the bajillion examples, and if you just wanted someone to ‘chair it’, all you’d have to say is “kursi karo!”.
